At least 40 people were killed and 36 others were injured today (Sunday) in an air attack on a market in the southern city of Khartoum in Sudan. This is the deadliest attack recorded since the beginning of the civil war in the country last April.

According to reports in the local media, the injured were transferred to Khartoum hospitals for treatment, while no information was released about their condition. At this stage it is not clear which of the warring parties was responsible for the current deadly attack, and whether it is an attack by the Sudanese army or by the militia organizations fighting them.

According to estimates, in the months of fighting, at least 7,500 people were killed throughout Sudan, of which at least 4,000 were in the Khartoum area. The UN organizations and countries around the world worked in recent months to bring about an arrangement between the rebels and the government which would bring an end to the fighting, but without success.
