Israel Police Prepares Bid for New Speeding Gun That Captures Drivers' Faces

The Israel Police is seeking to purchase mobile, operational speeding guns which also capture drivers' faces, making it unnecessary to engage in potentially dangerous chases.

The Israel Police is preparing a bid for a next generation radar gun for catching speeders, one which not only captures a car's speed but also the face of the driver, thus removing the need for the officer to engage in a fast and potentially dangerous chase to pull the speeder over, according to reporting by Calcalist.

The document being prepared for the bid states that the camera in question needs to both capture the speed of the driver and take a secure color photo of the vehicle. It will have to be proven to be in operational use by other police forces and used either on a tripod or over a police officer's shoulder.

It is not clear whether such devices actually exist at present, certainly in mobile form, but the bid may encourage their development, and if proven to be operational - they could help protect the lives of police officers when enforcing traffic laws.
