US President Biden took multiple swipes at his upcoming opponent for the November presidential elections Donald Trump. "You know he ain't the same guy that I beat in 2020. But don't tell him. He thinks he's running against Barack Obama. That's what he said,' Biden quipped at the Gridiron Dinner, where he was seated at the same table with the world's richest man, Jeff Bezos and Bezos' fiancé Lauren Sanchez.
The venerated event has been attended by US presidents since 1885 and was last frequented by Trump in 2018. Democratic Party leaders, foreign diplomats, and celebrities made up a vast majority of those in attendance. The UK's Daily Mail reported that Biden spent about 10 minutes of his speech blasting Trump and poking fun of himself as well. At one point he quipped that: "This speech is taking place six hours past my bedtime."
The President also took swipes at others, including former GOP presidential hopeful and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. "We're committed to helping the little guy... Ron DeSantis, but he won't take our calls," he joked.
Biden alluded to Trump saying that he would sacrifice a NATO country if they refused to pay their fiscal dues to the Alliance. "Democracy and freedom are literally under attack. Putin's on the march in Europe. My predecessor bows down to him and says, 'Do whatever the hell you want. We will not bow down, they will not bow down and I will not bow down," he pointed out. "'Look, I wish these were jokes, but they're not,' added the President.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox was the only Republican to attend the event. "I'm announcing my candidacy for president in 2052, when I still will be younger than both President Biden and President Trump," he joked.
