Hezbollah no longer a terrorist group? Arab league shifts stance

Major policy change redefines Shiite group's role in Lebanon and the Middle East.

In a major shift, the Arab League announced yesterday (Saturday) that it is no longer designating Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. This decision marks a significant change in the stance of the Arab world towards the powerful Lebanese Shiite group.

"Previous resolutions referred to Hezbollah as a terrorist organization," said Hossam Zaki, the assistant secretary-general of the Arab League, in an interview with Egyptian Al-Qahera News Channel. "However, member states have agreed this label should no longer be used." The League previously designated Hezbollah as a terrorist group in March 2016, as reported by Israel HaYom.

Zaki further clarified that the Arab League itself "does not maintain terrorist lists" and does not actively classify organizations as such.

Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar reported that League officials privately informed Hezbollah of the decision and believe the group "has a major role in Lebanon's future."

This move comes amidst heightened regional tensions. Hezbollah, known for its large rocket arsenal and close ties to Iran, has been engaged in cross-border attacks with Israel since Hamas' brutal onslaught on 7 October 2023.

The Arab League's decision to remove Hezbollah from its terror list is a controversial move with far-reaching implications. It could be seen as an attempt to foster dialogue and stability in a volatile region. However, critics argue that it legitimizes a group with a history of violence and undermines efforts to combat terrorism.

Only time will tell how this shift will impact the future of Lebanon, the broader Middle East, and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
