The Eiffel Tower, one of the world's major tourist attractions, which is generally accessible every day throughout the year, will be shut down until further notice due to a strike by its workers over working conditions and pay raises, according to reporting by AP and the BBC.

The strike was declared ahead of negotiations with the City of Paris, which owns the monument, and the union representative would not say how long it would last.

The Tower's official website contains a notice regarding the strike action that reads as follows:

"Due to a strike action of a part of the Eiffel Tower personnel, the Eiffel Tower is currently closed. We apologize for the inconvenience. The Esplanade (glass bottom view of the tower from below) will remain open and free of charge."
