Still, Far Fewer Casualties Than Expected

WSJ: IDF making progress against Hezbollah, but fight remains hard

Soldiers and officers speaking to the Wall Street Journal speak of a tough, prolonged guerilla fight against small, determined units.

The IDF has "seized more than 66,000 Hezbollah weapons, including nearly 6,000 explosive devices and more than 3,000 antitank missiles" since the start of the ground operation in the north, according to IDF sources speaking to the Wall Street Journal.

Israel has also killed at least over 1,500 Hezbollah members and wounded thousands more, through air strikes, ground operations, and the pager operation.

However, despite relatively low casualties and penetrations of up to three miles into south Lebanese territory, the IDF still faces a tough fight, as Hezbollah units are much more thoroughly trained to operated in small, isolated groups, waiting for days and even weeks to ambush IDF troops.

It's a different kind of fight than the one against Hamas, which has been continuously degraded and less organized since the offensive in the Gaza Strip. Still, Hezbollah has also been weakened, if not as much as Hamas.
