Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi vowed on Sunday that Tehran would retaliate for the death of senior Quds Force officer Abbas Nilforoushan, who was killed alongside Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut’s Dahieh district.

“This will not go unanswered,” Araghchi declared, following confirmation from Iranian officials that Nilforoushan had been inside the underground command center when the strike hit. Araghchi’s comments come amid mounting tensions within the Iranian leadership over how to respond to Nasrallah’s high-profile assassination.

According to a report in The New York Times, Iranian hardliners are demanding a swift and forceful response, while the country’s moderate President Massoud Pezhkian is urging caution, warning that an escalation could trigger a regional war that would devastate Iran’s already fragile economy.
