Police arrest suspect, Mea Sharim

During Rosh Chodesh Procession: Police Raid in Mea Shearim

A month after an ultra-Orthodox extremist attacked police officers who were arresting a flag-waver during an anti-Zionist procession in the heart of the Haredi neighborhood, the suspect was located today and arrested at his home by police detectives in Jerusalem.

On Rosh Chodesh Av, officers from the Lev HaBira Station in the Jerusalem District conducted both covert and overt operations against ultra-Orthodox extremists in the Mea Shearim neighborhood, where a monthly procession with Palestinian flags and anti-Zionist symbols takes place. During this operation, detectives from the Lev HaBira Station were attacked by another suspect who sprayed what is believed to be pepper spray at them while they were arresting a suspect for waving a Palestinian flag. As a result of the attack, the detectives experienced burning in their eyes but managed to complete the arrest of the suspect they intended to detain, despite the efforts of the additional suspect to disrupt their operation.

Today (Wednesday), during the Rosh Chodesh Elul procession, information was received about the location of the suspect who attacked the detectives. Lev HaBira surveillance teams arrived at his home in Mea Shearim and arrested him. The suspect, aged 29, was transferred for questioning at the police station. He will be brought before the court tomorrow, where the police will request an extension of his detention. The police stated: "The Israel Police will act severely against various incidents of violence, using all available tools and means to reach those involved and ensure they are brought to justice."
