US President Joe Biden addressed the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday night, delivering a spirited speech aimed at energizing the party's base.
President Biden emphasized his administration's commitment to securing the release of hostages held by Gaza-based terror groups and bringing an end to the ongoing conflict.
"We’re working around the clock—my secretary of state and I—to prevent a wider war, reunite hostages with their families, and urgently deliver humanitarian aid, including health and food assistance, into Gaza," Biden stated. He also expressed his administration's goal "to end the civilian suffering of the Palestinian people and finally, finally deliver a ceasefire and bring this war to an end."
Biden highlighted recent efforts, saying, "Two days ago, I put forward a proposal that brought us closer to this goal than we’ve been since October 7."
As Biden spoke, a group of anti-Israel protesters silently turned their backs on him, covering their mouths with their hands in protest against his administration's support for Israel.
Biden took direct shots at former President Donald Trump, who will be facing off against Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. "He says we’re losing. He's the loser! He’s dead wrong!" Biden declared, drawing cheers from the crowd.
The President also accused Trump of wanting to cut essential programs like Social Security and Medicare, a claim aimed at highlighting the stakes of the upcoming election.
"Because of all of you in this room and others, we came together in 2020 to save democracy," Biden said. "As your president, I've been determined to keep America moving forward, not going back."
