"If I were Rabbi Benny Lau"

Rabbi Avraham Stav shares: "If I were Rabbi Benny Lau"

Rabbi Avraham Stav refers to Rabbi Benny Lau's abandonment of the sukkah into which Rabbi Yitzchak Wasserlauf entered, and says that he would have behaved differently: "They are also part of us. There is something to hear from them as well and we must talk to them"

Rabbi Avraham Stav says that if he had been in Rabbi Benny Lau's place, he would not have abandoned the Sukkah upon the entry of Minister Yitzhak Wasserlauf of Otzma Yehudit.

As a reminder, a meeting was held in the Sukkah of Member of Knesset Michal Waldiger from the Religious Zionist party. When Minister Yitzhak Wasserlauf entered the Sukkah, Rabbi Benny Lau stood up and left the place.

Now Rabbi Stav says, "I do want to say that had I been in Rabbi Benny Lau's place, I wouldn't have left the Sukkah. I have no sympathy whatsoever for the Otzma Yehudit party, in all shades of support for the extremism within it. I think it's a disgrace that a third, if not more, of the sector voted for it. And it's an absolute loss of sanity to give such senior roles in the government to sworn lawbreakers.

"However, I wouldn't have left the Sukkah. Not when Shikma Bressler entered it, and not when Minister Wasserlauf entered. Because they are also here. They are also part of us. They also have something to say, and we have an obligation to speak with them.

"The beauty of the Sukkah is that it allows you to welcome guests whom you wouldn't be able to receive in your home. And it enables you to enter shared spaces even with those you wouldn't step into their apartment. It requires a certain sacrifice, stepping out of familiar borders and norms, but it's the only way in which all of Israel should sit in one Sukkah."
