France imposes sanctions on 28 settlers for violence against Palestinians

This decision comes after the US and UK sanctioned four individuals accused of engaging in violent attacks against local Palestinians.

The French Foreign Ministry issued a joint statement with the French Interior Ministry today (Tuesday), announcing that 28 settlers found to have engaged in "violence" against Palestinians are officially barred from entering the country.

The statement also said that France would be looking into ensuring Europe-wide bans against the settlers under sanction, and stressed that "settlement activity is illegal under international law" and that its continuation is incompatible with a Palestinian state, which is the only peaceful solution.

Previously, the US and UK imposed sanctions on four settlers accused of engaging in violence against Palestinians. Unlike those sanctions, though, France has not yet named the 28 individuals in question.

The American decision to sanction settlers has come under criticism from scholars such as Eugene Kontorovich as being overbroad, covering not only people alleged to engage in violence but even just those who oppose a Palestinian state or simply live in Judea and Samaria.
