Barkat: Palestinian workers must not be returned to the streets

Following the stabbing attack in Gan Yavneh which was carried out by a terrorist who had previously worked in construction and knew the commercial center, the Minister of Economy called for a continued ban on the entry of Palestinian workers to Israel.

Economy Minister Nir Barkat commented on the stabbing attack that took place Sunday night in Gan Yavneh, in which a terrorist illegally dwelling in Israel, who previously worked in construction in the city, stabbed three people, leaving them in serious condition. "The attack in Gan Yavneh is a painful reminder that Palestinian workers must not be returned to the streets of Israel," said Barkat.

According to Barkat: "The terrorist held a work visa and was illegally living in Israel. The lesson we learned from the October 7 massacre is inked in blood and is unequivocal: Don't let the enemy into your home. It's time to leave behind the old concepts and realize that money doesn't buy peace."

In the meantime, manpower problems in the construction industry are getting worse and about two weeks ago a discussion was held in the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee on the subject of gradually returning Palestinian workers to the Israeli market.

The Prime Minister's office commented after the debate: "Prime Minister Netanyahu did not approve any pilot program to re-introduce Palestinian workers to Israel. On the contrary, the Prime Minister is the one who promoted bringing in foreign workers from other countries to Israel this week."
