After Attorney General Baharav-Miara submitted the state’s response regarding the Draft Law, the Supreme Court issued a dramatic decision.

Supreme Court justices Uzi Fogelman, Yitzhak Amit, and Noam Solberg issued an interim injunction tonight (Thursday) freezing government funding for yeshivah students eligible for the draft, starting April 1. Earlier, the Attorney General had submitted a separate response from that of the Prime Minister on the Draft Law, stating that without a new law, the Charedim should be drafted in March and support for the yeshivahs denied after a brief adjustment period.

‘With the expiration of the decision, and absent an alternative normative framework, from April 1 there will be no source of authority allowing the sweeping avoidance of procedures for drafting yeshivah students. As the state submitted in its preliminary response to the draft appeals in February 21, in this state of affaits, all the authorized state bodies will be obligated to work towards the draft of yeshivah students in accordance with the law,” she said.

Prime Minister Netanyahu appealed in an independent letter to the Supreme Court, where he wrote that he does not agree with this stance and that “We have achieved significant progress on the subject of the draft, we request an extension of 30 days to arrive at agreements.”

As noted, the Supreme Court rejected this appeal.
