Rabbi Howard "Chaim" Balter, whose brilliant Torah lectures drew crowds to Agudath Israel of Long Island for decades and whose private acts of charity changed countless lives, passed away today (Tuesday).

Known affectionately as "Reb Howie" to his students, Balter had a unique gift for making complex Talmudic texts come alive. His morning lectures at the Yeshiva of Far Rockaway became must-attend events, where he would unpack intricate religious concepts with a mix of deep insight and engaging delivery that kept his audience spellbound.

Behind the scenes, Balter was a quiet force of generosity. He funded major scholarly works like the Encyclopedia Talmudica while also anonymously paying for wedding expenses for struggling couples and seminary tuition for women returning to religious observance.

Despite battling illness in recent years, Balter never missed his daily study sessions. Until his final days, he could be found each morning at the Yeshiva, poring over ancient texts with the same enthusiasm that marked his entire career.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10:00 AM at Agudat Israel of Long Island, with burial to follow in Israel. He is survived by his wife and children.
