Hate crimes targeting Jews in the United States surged by 63% in 2023, reaching 1,832 reported incidents, compared to 1,122 the previous year, marking the highest number ever recorded, according to FBI statistics released Monday.

The data shows that antisemitic crimes accounted for 15% of all hate crimes in 2023 and represented 68% of religion-based hate crimes, even though Jews make up only about 2% of the U.S. population.

The FBI also noted a 34% rise in anti-Arab incidents, with 123 cases documented, the highest since the agency began tracking this data in 2015.

Additionally, anti-Muslim incidents rose by 49% in 2023, with 236 cases reported, the most since 2017, when 273 incidents were documented. The record number of anti-Muslim incidents, 307, was reported in 2016.

Responding to the report, Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt stated, “At a time when the Jewish community is still suffering from the sharp rise in antisemitism following Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre in Israel, the record-high number of anti-Jewish hate crime incidents is unfortunately entirely consistent with the Jewish community’s experience and ADL’s tracking. Hate crimes are uniquely harmful, traumatizing both the individual and their community.”
