United States Secret Service Director Cheatle announced today (Tuesday) that she was resigning.
Cheatle had come under increasing scrutiny and withering criticism from both Republicans and Democrats for the Secret Service's failure to stop an assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Yesterday, she was grilled by both Republican and Democratic legislators. At the end of the hearing, they called on her to resign, which she did today.
Meanwhile, US House Speaker Mike Johnson announced today that he would be forming a bipartisan task force to quickly investigate the assassination attempt on former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump.
In a post he published on X, he said that "The security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life are shocking." In response, House Minority Leader Hakeen Jeffries "and I are announcing a House Task Force made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate the matter. The task force will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again."
