'Baruch Dayan Emet': The educator and social activist, Prof. Alice Shalvi, passed away today (Monday) at the age of 96. She left behind a husband and six children.
Shalvi began her career as an English teacher at the Hebrew University, and later also moved to lecturing at Ben Gurion University in Be'er Sheva. In 1975, Shloy began serving as the principal of the "Pelech Girls High School" in Jerusalem, which was in danger of closing and led the school until 1990.
During her life Shalvi received many titles for her educational work: in 1986 she was chosen to light a torch at the Independence Day ceremony, and 3 years later she received the Emil Grünzweig Medal of Human Rights for a special contribution to the promotion of human rights in Israel. In 1997 Shalvi received the A symbol of the beloved city of Jerusalem, and in 2007 she was awarded the Israel Life Achievement Award for her special contribution to society and the country.
The Ne'emanei Torah Va'Avodah movement paid tribute to Shloy's death, saying that "Prof. Shalvi was an outstanding educator, winner of the Israel-Prize for Lifetime Achievement, and one of the founders of feminism in Israel, and religious feminism in particular. For many years, she ran the "Pelech Girls High School", serving as an example and a role model to many girls and women, and leaving behind her a legacy of a determined struggle to advance the status of women. May her memory be blessed."
