Science Minister Ofir Akunis of the Likud will be appointed Israel's ambassador to the United Nations and will replace the current ambassador Gilad Erdan who will finish his post next year.

According to the report in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, senior government officials claim that the appointment is closed and agreed upon between Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Eli Cohen.

In addition, knowledgeable sources say that Erdan himself is not interested in extending his term and wants to return to Israel for family reasons.

Let us recall that Netanyahu will soon be required to fill a number of diplomatic positions overseas, among them the next Consul General of Israel in New York.

At the same time, the Prime Minister will have to decide who will be appointed Israel's ambassador to Washington in the place of Mike Herzog, who will also finish his term in the coming year.

According to estimates, Netanyahu intends to appoint ministers who hold senior positions to these positions.
