Iran's judiciary announced Tuesday that three people accused of spying for Israel and involvement in the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh have been sentenced to death.

According to a report in Iran's Fars news agency, Iranian judicial system spokesman Asghar Jahangir said that the three convicts were involved in transporting equipment used to kill Fakhrizadeh, and they were captured in West Azerbaijan Province operating under the guise of alcohol smugglers.

Fakhrizadeh, head of the Innovation and Research Organization of the Iranian Ministry of Defense, was murdered on November 27, 2020, when his car was attacked near his home in the rural area east of Tehran.

Iranian media reported that Fakhrizadeh had been targeted by Israel for many years, at least since 2007, because of his central role in the Iranian regime's military nuclear development.
