Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is reportedly signaling to donors in private conversations that he's open to a Democratic presidential ticket not headed by President Joe Biden, Axios reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, Schumer has spent the last 12 days listening to donors' ideas and suggestions about the best path forward for the party, according to three people familiar with the discussions.
Schumer is one of several influential Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who have the stature to potentially persuade Biden to step aside.
While a Schumer spokesman initially declined to comment, Schumer later released a statement saying, "As I have made clear repeatedly, publicly and privately, I support President Biden and remain committed to ensuring Donald Trump is defeated in November."
