1 dead and 50 injured as large earthquake hits Taiwan

A strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, killed one person and injured 50 others.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan overnight, killing one person and injuring 50 others. This is the strongest quake recorded in the region in 25 years. Rescue forces in the country are searching for individuals trapped under the rubble.

Last month, an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit eastern Japan. No damage or casualties were reported in that incident.

According to authorities, the epicenter in the latter earthquake was off the coast of Fukushima prefecture, at a depth of 68 km below sea level. Tremors were also reported in Tokyo.
