White House ignores Congress, sends "urgent" aid package to Ukraine

The US hopes that the $500 million vital military aid packages can offset Russia's battleground gains.

Congress announced a rare move yesterday (Tuesday) whereby it will send about $500 million worth of urgent military aid including anti-aircraft missiles, ammunition, and armored vehicles to help Ukraine fend off the Russian onslaught in the East and South of the country.

According to Breitbart News, the move comes as Ukraine faces extreme arms shortages in its war with Russia and the Republican-majority House of Representatives has conditioned Ukraine aid with putting an end to the border crisis.

“Today, on behalf of President Biden, I’m announcing an emergency package of security assistance and $300 million worth of weapons and equipment to address some of Ukraine’s pressing needs,” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan was quoted as saying.

“The world is watching. The clock is ticking and we need to see action as rapidly as possible.”

Officials say the move was made possible by money the Pentagon has saved on other spendings. They also say they are concerned that Russian gains will be bolstered by Congress's lack of action and by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump urging Putin to invade other NATO states if they do not come up with meaningful budgets to offset US spending in the North Atlantic Alliance.

Last week, it was reported that the UK will provide Ukraine with 10,000 drones, including 1,000 one-way or "kamikaze" drones, in its war against Russia, according to Reuters.

The announcement was made by Defense Secretary Grant Shapps during his third visit to the country.

Britain is now adding £125 million to a previously announced £200 million military aid package to Ukraine.
