Worrying, Yet Contradictory Poll Shows Worsening Views Towards Jews Among Young Americans

A recent Harvard/Harris poll shows conflicted and conflicting views of younger Americans towards Jews and Israel, but overall more negative than older generations.

A recent Harvard/Harris poll shows younger Americans aged 18-24 having generally much more negative or critical views towards Jews and Israel than any other age group. However, the signs and answers are contradictory.

For instance, most age groups opposed the following statement "Do you think that Jews as a class are oppressors and should be treated as oppressors or is that a false ideology?" while those aged 18-24 supported it by 67-33. The same numbers of young people support an unconditional ceasefire leaving everything in place.

Yet a large, if smaller majority than other age groups also supports Hamas being removed as ruler of Hamas by 58-42, and roughly the same number of young people as older groups support Israel's right to launch air strikes against Hamas with due warnings against civilians.

Meanwhile, 70% of those aged 18-24 and 65% of those aged 25-34 believe Israel is trying to avoid civilian casualties in its war against Hamas, while 60% and 56% of these groups respectively also believe that Israel is committing genocide against the population of Gaza.

Perhaps the main contradictory response comes with regard to antisemitism. The same age group that agrees with the idea that "Jews as a class are oppressors" also think by a majority of 63-37 that antisemitism is prevalent on university campuses.

In short, younger Americans generally support Israel and Jews less but appear to have views that contradict, including support for and opposition to antisemitic views.
