Some signs are emerging that the Lebanese Army will be unable or uninterested in enforcing the demilitarization of southern Lebanon in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
According to Kann 11 News, a western source in touch with the Lebanese Army said that "those who think that the Lebanese Army will force Hezbollah to withdraw from the area south of the Litani is deluding themselves. It's a guaranteed recipe for a civil war."
This report flies in the face of increasing Israeli optimism regarding a possible lasting ceasefire which would ensure the safe return of northern residents to their homes, as Israel has insisted on Hezbollah staying north of the Litani River and on the Lebanese Army ensuring the area's demilitarization.
Meantime, the IDF continues to strike Hezbollah targets throughout Lebanon from the air and is working to destroy Hezbollah weapons and infrastructure throughout southern Lebanon.
