The Government Press Office (GPO) is set to revoke the press credentials of Al Jazeera journalists operating in Jerusalem, following a unanimous government decision in May to shut down the network’s operations in Israel and block its broadcasts.

The GPO made its decision after conducting a thorough review of legal and security considerations, in line with GPO regulations, which grant the director authority to revoke press credentials if the holder is deemed a threat to national security.

GPO Director Nitzan Chen stated, "The GPO holds freedom of the press and expression as core values. However, since October 7th, Al Jazeera's coverage in Israel has crossed several lines. Some of their reports fail to adhere to universal journalistic standards, including basic ethics, fairness, and balance. This network has spread false content that incites against Israelis and Jews and endangers IDF soldiers. As a result, allowing their journalists to use GPO cards during this time of military emergency could threaten state security."

The revocation of GPO cards will be subject to a hearing and will apply to Al Jazeera journalists and broadcasters in both Hebrew and Arabic, excluding producers and photographers. This revocation will remain in effect for the duration of the Knesset's temporary legislation.
