Lieutenant General Ahmed Khalifa, Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, mad a surprise visit to inspect the security situation on the Egypt-Gaza border today (Thursday), according to Egyptian state media.
Egypt has been concerned about the stability of its border with the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the war, often threatening Israel with an ending of the peace treaty should Israel take steps such as push for the temporary evacuation of Gazans into Egypt or take control of the Rafah border crossing or the Philadelphi Corridor.
Regarding the latter, Egypt has consistently opposed the idea of an Israeli military presence along the border, a stance supported not only by Hamas but also the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
At least one incident took place in which the IDF exchanged fire with Egyptian soldiers following crossfire with Hamas terrorists. One Egyptian soldier was killed.
