Histadrut, General Strike

Histadrut abruptly calls off economic strike by 6 PM

After a contentious Labor Court hearing, the strike concludes early, sparking protests from left-wing groups.

Israel's national trade union center - the Histadrut - announced a short time ago (Monday) during a hearing at the Labor Court that the strike will end today at 6 p.m (Israel time).

This is a dramatic change of direction, since yesterday the Histadrut's original plan was to extend the strike at least until tomorrow, but it seems that the strike did not succeed as expected as Arnon Bar-David (Chairman of the Histadrut) and the leftist protestors wanted.

Earlier today, the State Attorney's Office submitted an urgent request to the Labor Court to issue an injunction against the political strike that was announced yesterday by Amnon Bar David.

The request submitted by the attorney's office on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, stated that "at the request of the Minister of Finance and the Prime Minister, the Honorable Court is hereby requested to issue an urgent temporary and/or interim relief to determine that the sudden strike announced by the Histadrut Chairman, Mr. Arnon Bar-David, regarding all state employees, is not a strike for the purposes of a collective labor dispute and as such it is a political strike, and orders to stop this strike."
