IDF to Do Early Draft of Mechina and Yeshiva Students

As reported by Srugim/JFeed, the Defense Ministry is drafting some 1300 religious Zionist yeshiva and mechina students early due to the war, and they are set to be inducted this March.

Due to the ongoing war and the IDF’s desire to meet the quotas of new draftees, the Defense Ministry officially announced that it will be drafting some 1300 students at pre-military mechinahs, hesder yeshivahs, and those doing a year of national volunteer service, as Srugim/JFeed reported two weeks ago.

According to an announcement by the IDF and the Defense Ministry: “Based on the outline, the service of some 1300 young people will be bumped up and done in a balanced manner among the different tracks, considering their essence, character, and length among other things. The planned early draft is set in the following manner: some 840 students of the pre-military mechinahs and the national service tracks and another 450, this relative to the size of the different tracks, and with an emphasis on those who were set to be drafted in 2024.”

A previous breakdown had originally been planned, such that the burden would fall more in the mechinahs and national service volunteers, but it was ultimately decided to recruit more from the hesder yeshivahs.

Due to IDF Demand: Here’s How We Decide Who Gets Drafted Early

Srugim/JFeed published that the Keshet Yehudah mechinah plans to conduct a lottery among the students to see who gets drafted earlier. According to a message sent out to students of the mechinah, this was the method chosen in order to meet the requirements of the defense establishment.

An investigation among other institutions shows they have not yet decided whether to do a lottery or find another way to determine who gets drafted early such as student volunteers or arbitrary decision.

According to the message sent to the students of the Keshet mechinah, the mechinahs are supposed to receive the number of students needed by the IDF.

“We saw fit, based on dialogue and partnership with the students, to conduct a lottery with an equal chance for everyone. We do not prefer one student over the other. In the hope that the number needed for the draft will be small, and that the number of volunteers will be sufficient for the IDF’s needs.”
