Rebuilding war-torn infrastructure.
Israel Railways began to restore train tracks in the Ashkelon and Sderot areas today (Tuesday) which had been damaged by rockets and shrapnel over the past few weeks.
The work is taking place with heavy engineering equipment, alongside teams of rail, communications, signalling, and logistics workers as well as safety supervisors, who are working in accordance with Rear Command instructions and with proper protection.
This is one of a number of track portions being gradually restored in coordination with Rear Command. The repairs will allow for improved operational flexibility for the train system in the south, with an emphasis on increasing the volume of containers moved from Ashdod Port and nearby logistical terminals to locations throughout the country, as well as an improved and more operationally flexible rail connection to Haifa Port.
Israel Railways Director-General Moshe Zana noted that “even in this time, we are continuing to develop the capabilities of the train, both in the passenger’s sector and in the cargo sector, and we are working to maintain existing tracks, alongside the laying and development of new tracks, including in the southern area. I express great appreciation to our workers spread out in different locations, and with an emphasis on the southern area, and who contribute to the continued and continuous functioning of the train, sometimes under fire.”
