The US military announced today (Thursday) that its forces had thwarted an attempt to smuggle advanced Iranian weapons, which were believed to be on their way to the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

According to the American military's statement, the incident took place about two weeks ago, when Navy forces raided a ship that was sailing in the Arabian Sea. Over 200 packages were found on the ship that contained components for ballistic missiles, warheads, military radios, and rocket launchers. A preliminary investigation by the army revealed that the weapons of the types found in the raid were previously used by the Houthis in their attacks against merchant ships in the Red Sea.

"This is another example of Iran's nefarious activity in the region," said CENTCOM Force Commander, General Eric Korilla. "The continued supply of weapons to the Houthis is contrary to international law and UN resolutions, and undermines the security of cargo ships and maritime commerce. We will continue to act in every possible way, including American and UN sanctions, to expose and thwart these attempts, and to restore freedom of navigation and navigation at sea," he added.
