A leading Orthodox Jewish journalist has cast doubt on former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's ability to win support from the Orthodox community in a potential New York City mayoral bid, describing him as "toxic" among religious Jewish voters.

According to reporting by Jewish Insider, Cuomo is preparing to launch a mayoral campaign as current Mayor Eric Adams faces mounting legal challenges. However, Ami Magazine's Yochonon Donn suggested Cuomo should focus his efforts elsewhere, stating the former governor "does not realize how toxic he is in the Orthodox community."

The development comes as Cuomo attempts to rebuild his political career, recently emphasizing his pro-Israel stance amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. At a recent National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education dinner in Manhattan, Cuomo reaffirmed his support for Israel, declaring, "This is the moment when true friends stand up shoulder to shoulder and fight for the State of Israel."

Despite his efforts to court Jewish voters and his record of supporting pro-Israel policies, Cuomo faces significant hurdles within the Orthodox community, largely stemming from his COVID-19 restrictions targeting religious gatherings during his governorship.

The former governor recently announced he will join Alan Dershowitz's legal 'dream team' defending Benjamin Netanyahu at the International Criminal Court, as he continues trying to strengthen his ties with the Jewish community.

The news comes as New York City's political landscape remains uncertain, with incumbent Mayor Eric Adams facing legal scrutiny and speculation mounting about potential primary challengers in the upcoming election.
