FOILED BY SHOMRIM AND NYPD: Woman who stole tefillin in Flatbush was caught, tefilin safely returned

Flatbush Shomrim's volunteers played cat-and-mouse with the thief for over an hour, proving once again that in this tight-knit community, crime doesn't pay – but cooperation does.

A woman suspected of stealing religious items was arrested Wednesday night in Flatbush, Brooklyn, thanks to the quick response of local Shomrim volunteers and NYPD officers.

The incident began when a Flatbush resident noticed a woman attempting to break into cars near Avenue L and Ocean Parkway. The witness immediately alerted Flatbush Shomrim.

Shomrim volunteers responded promptly, tracking the suspect for over an hour as she moved through the area. During this time, the woman allegedly broke into a car on East 10th Street and Avenue N, stealing a pair of Tallis and Tefillin.

Shomrim coordinated with NYPD throughout the incident. Their efforts paid off when police officers apprehended the suspect near East 9th Street and Avenue N, shortly after the theft occurred.

The suspect now faces charges of grand larceny.

It's worth putting an AirTag into your Tefillin bag, which has proven helpful in past theft cases, and often helps the owner to reclaim his tefilin bag if it is stolen.
