Top 5 amazing summer destinations with almost no tourists

Europe's summer rush has reached a frenzy, with some destinations actively discouraging tourists while others face overwhelming crowds prompting entrance fees. Here are some top holiday spots without all the chaos.

Greece is teeming with Brits (and Israelis), yet there are hidden European gems with minimal tourist footfall. It's not too late to divert to lesser-known but equally stunning destinations across the continent.

Lesser-known, more precious: If you're a fan of international travel (and who isn't?), chances are you've explored Europe's main attractions, from France, Great Britain, Italy, and Spain to destinations nearer Israel like the Greek Islands. However, a glance at Europe's map reveals places that remain off the beaten path for most travellers. These destinations not only offer the joy of discovery but also contribute to alleviating the over-tourism plaguing popular spots like Spain, Italy, and Croatia this summer.

Euro News highlights five European destinations with minimal queues, based on data from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and contributed by Israeli news channel, walla.

1) San Marino: A surprising microstate

San Marino boasts unique architecture and breath-taking mountain vistas, yet it remains largely undiscovered. This landlocked "microstate" within Italy covers just 61 square kilometres - about half the size of Jerusalem. Approximately 60,000 tourists visit annually, making it the least visited destination on the European continent. Visitors can explore centuries-old historical sites, notably the "Three Towers of San Marino," dating back to the 11th century and proudly featured on the state flag.

2) Liechtenstein: Landscapes from fairy tales

Nestled between Austria and Switzerland, Liechtenstein enchants with fairy-tale landscapes that attract a modest 69,000 tourists yearly. This tiny principality spanning 160 square kilometres boasts medieval castles, Alpine huts, and picturesque villages. Whether skiing in winter or hiking in summer, Liechtenstein offers unparalleled natural beauty. Culture enthusiasts will appreciate Vaduz, the capital, renowned for its museums and art galleries.

3) Moldova: Eastern European charm

Moldova, often overlooked due to its location between Ukraine and Romania, welcomes just 121,000 visitors annually, making it Europe's most affordable destination. Ideal for budget travellers, Moldova boasts internationally acclaimed wineries, a rich historical legacy, and Balkan-Slavic cuisine. Its unspoiled attractions are perfect for those seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences before they gain popularity.

4) Monaco: Playground of the rich and famous

Monaco may be small, but it captivates luxury aficionados and racing enthusiasts alike. Known for its opulent hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, and prestigious Grand Prix, Monaco hosts a mere fraction of Europe's tourists due to its high cost of living. Visitors can explore historic landmarks like the Prince's Palace and unwind at Larvotto Beach amidst Riviera glamour.

5) Bosnia and Herzegovina: A resurgence in tourism

Emerging from its troubled past, Bosnia and Herzegovina is re-emerging as a sought-after Balkan destination. With around half a million visitors annually, the country offers a wealth of historical intrigue, notably in Sarajevo, where the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand triggered World War I. Highlights include the poignant Tunnel of Hope, symbolizing the city's resilience.

These destinations not only promise unforgettable experiences but also contribute to sustainable tourism by diverting attention from overcrowded hotspots. Whether exploring historic treasures, indulging in natural beauty, or immersing in cultural delights, Europe's lesser-known gems await discovery.
