Travel experts issue warning ahead of European travel

Travel experts are warning tourists about the spread of diseases that were once only found in tropical regions but have now made their way to popular vacation spots in Europe like Spain, Greece, and Italy, channel 12 reports.

One particular danger highlighted by travel guru Claudia Tavani is the risk of complications from mosquito bites, such as infections caused by fly larvae transferred through the bite. The larvae can develop under the skin for up to 10 weeks, causing bruising, itching, and inflammation, which may require medical treatment.

Former flight attendant Res Marty emphasizes the importance of being aware of common diseases in tropical countries, including yellow fever, typhoid, malaria, and jaundice, which can be transmitted through contaminated food and water, mosquito bites, or direct contact with infected individuals. It is recommended to consult with a doctor specializing in tropical diseases before traveling to assess the necessary vaccinations and preventive measures.

Travel agent Hans Mast highlights the need for travellers to research health risks in their destination, stay informed about disease outbreaks, and ensure they have a well-stocked first aid kit. Insect repellent is essential to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses like Zika, yellow fever, dengue fever, and malaria. Taking precautions such as wearing long clothing and using mosquito repellent can help protect tourists from these potentially dangerous diseases while on vacation.
