Israeli Rugby team faces hatred after beating Malta
After the match, players Yishai Avrahami and Gur Levy confronted jeering spectators waving Palestinian flags by proudly raising the Israeli flag, a photo that’s now sweeping social media.

Israel’s rugby team notched a historic 16-15 upset over Malta. This was their first-ever victory against the Mediterranean nation, which is ranked 23 spots higher globally, a huge accomplishment.
The game stayed sportsmanlike until the end, when Israel’s anthem triggered a shift. About 60-70 fans unfurled Palestinian flags and hurled insults at the team. “It was normal until the anthem; then suddenly, seconds after our win, they started cursing us,” said Gur Levy. “We hugged, locked eyes, and sang louder to drown them out.” Avrahami and Levy then strode toward the crowd, flag aloft, turning a tense standoff into a symbol of resilience.
Israel Rugby Union Chairman Ofer Hamburger praised the team’s grit to Israel Hayom. “It was a tough, fair fight on the field, despite the abuse from the stands,” he said. “These players, natural fighters, didn’t need a pep talk. The protesters weren’t tied to Malta’s rugby community: we got great hospitality otherwise.” The win boosts Israel’s playoff hopes for European promotion.
