Israeli football legend's home targeted in grenade attack

A fragmentation grenade was thrown last night (Sunday) at 11:00 PM toward the home of Israeli football legend and former sporting director of the Israel national team, Yossi Benayoun. The grenade was hurled while Benayoun was at home with his family.

Israel Police released a statement: "A report was received at the police hotline last night regarding an explosion heard outside a residence on Jabotinsky Street in Ramat Hasharon. Officers from the Glilot station arrived at the scene and launched an investigation, collecting evidence and findings. The explosion caused damage to the house’s gate. There were no casualties. The incident is believed to be criminally motivated."

Eyewitness accounts from passersby suggest that a motorcyclist arrived at the location, threw the grenade, and fled the scene. In any case, no one was injured.

Benayoun was questioned by the police, who suspect that the assailant may have mistaken the address. According to the Walla news site, Benayoun stated: "This was absolutely a mistake: I have no doubt the grenade wasn’t meant for my house. At first, I thought it was a gas balloon explosion, and we called the fire department. It was only when the police arrived and found grenade fragments that we realized what had actually happened."
