CIA Chief: Hamas leader Sinwar facing internal pressure to end war

CIA Director William Burns reported that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is under increasing internal pressure to end the war, release hostages, and agree to a cease-fire.

According to CNN, Burns stated that while Sinwar is not concerned with the fatalities among his group’s members, he is being pressed by Hamas for his role in the widespread suffering of Gazans.

American intelligence sources believe Sinwar is currently hiding in a tunnel beneath his hometown of Khan Younis, where he is making key decisions regarding potential deals. Burns, who has been involved in negotiations for months as a representative of U.S. President Joe Biden, emphasized the importance of both Israel and Hamas seizing the opportunity to reach a cease-fire agreement after more than nine months of conflict.

Sinwar faces pressure from his senior commanders, who are reportedly fed up with the ongoing war. Burns made these comments at the Billionaires' Summer Camp in Idaho, an annual conference attended by top administration officials, tech industry leaders, and other influential figures.

On Monday, Qatar informed Israel that the assassination attempt on Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif would not impede ongoing negotiations. Although Hamas has not officially stated that talks will be suspended and has publicly denied any intention to delay, the fallout from Israel’s attack on a Khan Younis compound and the killing of the brigade commander is believed to have caused significant disruptions within Hamas, leading them to reassess their position.

Sinwar’s current whereabouts and his elusive nature may pose challenges for mediators seeking clear answers from Hamas.
