Keeping on the pressure
Talk or Strike? Trump Plays Hardball with Tehran as Fleet Mobilizes
White House mulls diplomacy as military pressure mounts; France warns of "narrow window" before confrontation

As tensions mount the Trump administration is reportedly considering Iran's offer to engage in indirect nuclear negotiations, despite doubling down this week on economic sanctions targeting Iran’s drone supply networks.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned multiple companies in Iran, the UAE, and China, accusing them of supplying components to Qods Aviation Industries (QAI) — a key player in Iran’s UAV program. The sanctions are the latest measure in President Trump’s revived “maximum pressure” campaign against the Islamic Republic.
Meanwhile, a second U.S. aircraft carrier group is now en route to the region. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has ordered the USS Carl Vinson and its strike group to join the USS Harry S. Truman, already stationed in the Red Sea — where it has faced repeated Houthi attack attempts.
The Vinson, traveling from the Pacific, will reinforce U.S. air and naval power in what officials say is a "preventive posture". Additional air squadrons and support assets are being deployed as well.
Diplomacy vs. Deterrence
Meanwhile France is hosting diplomatic talks in Paris, trying to revive momentum toward a new nuclear deal. The French Foreign Ministry described the window for diplomacy as "narrow," warning that a failure could make military conflict “almost inevitable.” President Trump, for his part, has issued an ultimatum: Tehran must agree to a new agreement or risk preemptive U.S. strikes. In response, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed a "strong counterattack" to any aggression and Iranian state media emphasized that U.S. bases across the region are well within missile range.
Strike Preparations?
Adding to speculation that a strike may be imminent, the Pentagon has quietly moved at least five B-2 stealth bombers to Diego Garcia, a remote U.S. base in the Indian Ocean. This puts them within striking distance of both Iran and Yemen - all this while U.S. keeps pounding the Houthies for the past few weeks.
In a parallel track, Russia and Iran have held talks about Moscow possibly serving as a mediator between Tehran and Washington.
While the White House has not publicly endorsed the proposal, officials have signaled openness to third-party facilitation — provided Iran shows flexibility.
For now, the U.S. is escalating both pressure and positioning, sending an unmistakable message: talks may be on the table — but so are aircraft carriers and B-2 bombers.
