In the wake of a high-stakes government meeting aimed at discussing his dismissal, Shin Bet Chief Ronen Bar sent a scathing letter to Israeli ministers on Thursday night, fiercely criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to terminate him.

Bar accused Netanyahu of obstructing his work, preventing him from meeting with ministers, and attempting to disrupt sensitive investigations—particularly the high-profile Qatar-Gate probe into foreign influence in the Israeli government.

"A Preemptive Move to Suppress Investigations"

In his letter, Bar questioned the legality of the government’s expedited decision to remove him, emphasizing that the process violated standard legal protocols and ignored his right to a formal hearing.

"I have dedicated over 35 years to Israel’s security and hold deep respect for its institutions and the rule of law. However, I have decided not to attend this government meeting, as it does not align with the legal procedures required for terminating a senior official—let alone the head of the Shin Bet," Bar wrote.

Bar stressed that the allegations against him were vague and lacked substantial evidence, suggesting that the push for his dismissal was politically motivated.

"The decision is based on unfounded and superficial claims that do not allow me to formulate a proper response. These allegations seem to mask ulterior motives—motives that seek to weaken the Shin Bet’s ability to operate independently and investigate critical security matters," he stated.

Netanyahu’s Ban on Ministerial Meetings

Bar also revealed that Netanyahu had barred him from meeting with government ministers for over a year, preventing key figures from being briefed on Shin Bet activities.

"Unfortunately, most ministers have not been exposed to the full scope of the Shin Bet's operations due to Netanyahu’s directive prohibiting me from meeting with them. This order, which lacks clear legal justification, has prevented proper governmental oversight of our work," he wrote.

He further challenged Netanyahu’s claim that there was a "lack of trust" between them, particularly regarding the handling of hostage negotiations. "The latest hostage deal, which was successfully carried out, was the result of a unique operation personally led by me—with Netanyahu’s full knowledge and approval. This agreement was achieved according to the objectives he himself set and was brought to the government for approval," Bar asserted.

The Qatar-Gate Investigation and Its Fallout

Perhaps the most explosive claim in Bar’s letter was his assertion that Netanyahu's push to remove him was directly tied to the Qatar-Gate investigation—a Shin Bet probe into alleged foreign influence over decision-making at the highest levels of the Israeli government.

"This investigation, which involves Qatar's entanglement in Israel’s decision-making processes—right at the heart of the Prime Minister’s Office—is one of the most sensitive and critical national security probes we have undertaken. Ensuring the full completion of this investigation, regardless of its outcome, is a matter of utmost national interest," he stated.

Bar warned that any attempt to remove him from his position could be seen as an effort to disrupt the investigation. "The fact that my sudden dismissal is being rushed through—under absurd justifications—raises serious concerns about political interference. Such a move sends a chilling message to those involved in the investigation and poses a direct threat to Israel’s national security," he cautioned.

Final Words: A Warning Against Politicizing Security

Bar concluded his letter with a stark warning about the broader implications of his removal. "At a time when Israel is facing a multi-front war, with 59 hostages still held in Gaza, Hamas undefeated, and Iran’s influence growing inside our borders, it is astonishing that the government is taking actions that weaken our national resilience—both internally and against our enemies," he wrote.

Despite the ongoing turmoil, Bar vowed to continue fulfilling his duties according to Israeli law and under the directives of the appropriate legal authorities. "I will present my full and detailed response in the appropriate legal forum. The Shin Bet will remain dedicated to its mission, operating with integrity and determination, regardless of political pressures," he concluded.
