Government approves: Ben Gvir returns as Minister of National Security
Despite the Attorney General’s opposition, the government has voted in favor of Itamar Ben Gvir’s reappointment as Minister of National Security, setting the stage for a Knesset vote amid legal and political controversy

The government approved the appointment of MK Itamar Ben Gvir as Minister of National Security on Tuesday evening, despite the opposition of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara. A Knesset vote to finalize the appointment is expected to take place tomorrow.
Earlier in the evening, Baharav-Miara informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that, from a legal standpoint, Ben Gvir’s appointment could not proceed, arguing that his political involvement with law enforcement exceeded the authority granted to the minister in charge.
Despite this legal opinion, Netanyahu proceeded with the vote, stating in a conversation with Baharav-Miara that only he has the authority to appoint ministers, not the legal system, and that the law permits any candidate to serve as minister as long as they do not have a criminal indictment.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court rejected a request from left-wing organizations to issue an interim injunction blocking Ben Gvir’s appointment.
Justice Daphne Barak-Erez ruled: "Given that no formal response has yet been submitted regarding the arguments raised in the petitions, I do not find it necessary at this time to issue a temporary injunction in the absence of a full hearing."
