Breaking: Israel adopts U.S. plan for temporary ceasefire during Ramadan and Passover
Israel accepts U.S. mediated ceasefire plan, but Hamas remains reluctant

Following a high-level security discussion led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with the participation of the Defense Minister, senior security officials, and the negotiation team, Israel has decided to adopt the ceasefire proposal put forward by U.S. President’s envoy, Steve Witkoff. The plan calls for a temporary cessation of hostilities during the period of Ramadan and Passover.
According to the proposal, half of the hostages—both the living and the deceased—will be released on the first day of the ceasefire. The remainder will be released at the end of the ceasefire period, provided that an agreement for a permanent cessation of hostilities is reached.
Witkoff presented this proposal after assessing that, at this stage, there is no viable way to bridge the significant gaps between the parties’ positions to end the war. He emphasized the need for additional time for negotiations toward a long-term ceasefire.
While Hamas has repeatedly violated previous agreements, Israel has remained in compliance. Under the terms of the agreement, Israel reserves the right to resume military operations after 42 days if it determines that the negotiations are ineffective. This clause was supported by a side letter from the previous U.S. administration and has also received the backing of the Trump administration.
Israel’s acceptance of thex Witkoff plan is driven by its commitment to securing the return of its hostages. However, Hamas has so far refused to accept the proposal. Should Hamas change its stance, Israel will immediately enter negotiations to finalize the full details of the Witkoff framework.
