Relationship on the Brink: Egypt Threatens to Scrap Camp David Accords

A high-level Israeli military delegation arrived in Cairo last Friday for urgent talks on border security arrangements, according to a report by Qatari newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

The meeting took place amid rising tensions between the two nations following the Gaza war and Egypt's deployment of forces in the demilitarized Zone C.

During the discussions, both sides addressed a range of sensitive security issues, including the future of the Philadelphi Corridor and potential adjustments to the Camp David Accords.

Senior Egyptian officials delivered a stern warning to the Israeli delegation: any violation of the treaty by Israel would be met with reciprocal measures—even at the cost of annulling the agreement.

Israeli representatives voiced concerns over Egypt’s increased military presence in Zone C, emphasizing that it contradicts the peace treaty's demilitarization terms. In response, they also pushed for an update to the security annexes of the Camp David Accords, arguing that certain clauses no longer align with current security realities.

Egyptian sources indicated that Cairo is open to revisiting the agreement but insists that discussions must take place under "appropriate timing" and "a conducive atmosphere" to avoid jeopardizing the treaty altogether.

With diplomatic tensions running high, the fate of the historic peace accord now hangs in the balance.
