US vs. Hamas: the US Treasury Department announced today (Wednesday) that it would impose new sanctions on ten key Hamas activists and organizations involved in transferring money to the terror group. The statement said that these sanctions are meant to make it harder for Hamas to raise funds from abroad and transfer money around the world.
According to the statement, the activists in question are residents of Gaza, Sudan, Turkey, Algeria, and Qatar. The list published by the American government included the name of Hamas commander Ayman Nofal, who was killed in Gaza last night by IDF forces.
The Treasury Department also clarified that this is just the first wave of sanctions against Hamas, and additional sanctions are planned for the future:
“The United States is taking swift and decisive action to target Hamas’s financiers and facilitators following its brutal and unconscionable massacre of Israeli civilians, including children,” said Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen. “The U.S. Treasury has a long history of effectively disrupting terror finance and we will not hesitate to use our tools against Hamas. We will continue to take all steps necessary to deny Hamas terrorists the ability to raise and use funds to carry out atrocities and terrorize the people of Israel. That includes by imposing sanctions and coordinating with allies and partners to track, freeze, and seize any Hamas-related assets in their jurisdictions.”
