After coming to the defense of the Chief of Staff who was attacked on social media and severe criticism was leveled at his conduct as army commander and his conduct in the face of calls for resistance, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is now asking the politicians: "Criticize me, keep the IDF out of the political discussion."
"I just completed a long tour with the air force commander at the Ramon base," said the defense minister. "I met the best people in the State of Israel, I am proud of them."
"I am addressing the public figures – if you can't restrain yourselves, attack me, the Defense Minister. I am responsible for the Chief of Staff and the Commander of the Air Force. Remove the IDF from the political debate; it is the protective tool that gives life to the people of Israel."
Also yesterday (Monday), the Defense Minister came to the defense of Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzl "Hertzi" Halevi, after facing attacks from the right-wing in recent days regarding his handling as the IDF Commander in relation to the conscientious objection protests, including from the Prime Minister's own son who shared a harsh post against the Chief of Staff written by Erez Tadmor, a Likud member.
The Defense Minister published a statement in which he wrote: "Lt. Gen. Hertzi Halevi is one of the most outstanding officers I have encountered throughout my years in the IDF and in the security establishment. A courageous, upright, serious, composed, thoughtful, and prudent commander. Many citizens in the country owe him their lives."
The Minister added and emphasized: "The people of Israel are fortunate that during these complex times, Chief of Staff Halevi is leading the IDF."
