A state-aligned Iranian newspaper, widely viewed as a proxy for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, published a statement about the coming death of U.S. President Donald Trump, renewing calls for retaliation over the 2020 killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

The article, published by the 'Kayhan' daily paper, a passage stated that: “Any day now, in revenge for the blood of Martyr Soleimani, a few bullets are going to be fired into that empty skull of his.” The article further accused Trump of causing economic and institutional damage to the United States, citing resignations among officials and alleged financial harm.

These remarks follow Trump's warning that if Iran does not agree to a new nuclear deal, military action could be considered. Trump also suggested imposing tariffs as an alternative form of pressure.

Policy experts, including Jason Brodsky of 'United Against Nuclear Iran', have condemned the rhetoric, noting that the paper’s editor, Hossein Shariatmadari, is a direct appointee of Khamenei, and that the outlet’s repeated threats mirror previously disrupted plots by Iranian operatives targeting American officials.

Beni Sabti, a researcher at Israel's Institute for National Security Studies, stated the threats serve both as internal propaganda and a means to mobilize international hostility toward Trump. He likened the messaging to the clerical regime's incitement in the case of author Salman Rushdie, who was severely injured in a 2022 attack in New York after decades of threats tied to an Iranian-issued fatwa.

In November 2024, U.S. law enforcement disclosed a foiled Iranian plot to surveil and potentially assassinate Trump ahead of the presidential election. Federal court documents linked the plan to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
