French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot is warning that the likelihood of a military confrontation with Iran is growing increasingly imminent amid stalled nuclear negotiations.

Speaking to lawmakers following a security briefing led by President Emmanuel Macron, Barrot stressed that failure to revive a nuclear accord with will leave no diplomatic path forward.

“Without a renewed framework for agreement, the region edges dangerously close to open conflict,” he said. “A military clash would become almost unavoidable.”

The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), brokered between Iran and six world powers, placed limits on Tehran’s nuclear activity in exchange for international sanctions relief. However since Iran broke the terms, in May 2018, the Trump administration withdrew from the agreement, branding it “disastrous,” and implemented a policy of “maximum pressure” on Iran through sweeping sanctions.

European nations, including France, attempted to keep the deal alive through alternative financial mechanisms designed to shield Iran from U.S. sanctions. Despite these efforts, negotiations have ground to a halt, prompting Iranian authorities to further scale back compliance with the accord.

In a recent interview, President Trump reiterated his hard stance: “If they don’t come to the table, there will be bombing. Bombing like they’ve never seen before.” The statement drew an immediate response from Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who vowed that Iran would deliver “a strong and reciprocal blow” should it come under attack from the United States or Israel.

Amid the war of words, the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed on Tuesday that additional military assets have been deployed to the region including a fleet of four B-2 stealth bombers that have been repositioned to Diego Garcia — a strategic base in the Indian Ocean capable of supporting long-range operations across the Middle East.
