Survey Reveals A Historic Drop
Democratic Party hits all time low with only 29% of American approval
The Democratic Party is grappling with an unprecedented crisis as a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS reveals its favourability has cratered to a mere 29%—the lowest in over three decades of CNN tracking.


Released on March 17, 2025, the survey shows a staggering 20-point drop since January 2021, when Democrats reclaimed the White House from Donald Trump. This nosedive has party leaders scrambling to address a fractured base and a public increasingly disillusioned with their direction.
Frustration is boiling over among Democratic voters, with 57% of party members and left-leaning independents demanding a fiercer stand against Trump and GOP policies, compared to 42% who prefer bipartisan cooperation—a sharp reversal from 2017, when 74% favored collaboration. For the first time in nearly ten years, 52% of Democratic-aligned voters say the party is veering off course, a stark departure from the unity of eight years ago. While 72% of self-identified Democrats still view the party positively, only 37% of Democratic-leaning independents agree, exposing a widening rift between the base and its leadership.
The absence of a unifying figure compounds the turmoil. Asked to name the party’s true standard-bearer, respondents scattered: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez led with 10%, followed by Vice President Kamala Harris at 9%, Sen. Bernie Sanders at 8%, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries at 6%. Barack Obama and Rep. Jasmine Crockett each garnered 4%, while Sen. Chuck Schumer limped in at 2%. Over 30% couldn’t name anyone, with one voter quipping, “No one. That’s the issue.” In contrast, the GOP enjoys 79% approval among its base, rallied firmly behind Trump.
The party’s mainstream image has also eroded. Once seen as centrist by 56% in 2022, now 50% of Americans call Democrats too extreme—nearly matching the 51% who say the same of Republicans. Divisions by age, race, and ideology deepen the cracks: younger progressives back AOC and confrontation, while older moderates crave compromise. As the GOP consolidates, Democrats flounder—29% approval is a siren call they can’t ignore.
