North Korea has unveiled its first nuclear-powered submarine, marking a significant advancement in its military capabilities and raising security concerns for both South Korea and the United States. State media released images of leader Kim Jong Un inspecting the vessel—described as a “nuclear-powered strategic guided missile submarine”—at a major shipyard.

Experts believe the submarine could be a 6,000 to 7,000-ton vessel capable of carrying around 10 missiles, likely armed with nuclear-capable warheads. The development enhances North Korea’s second-strike capability, making it harder to neutralize its nuclear arsenal.

Speculation is growing that Russia may have assisted North Korea in overcoming key technological challenges in developing the nuclear-powered submarine. Military analysts suggest Pyongyang could have exchanged conventional weapons or even troops in support of Russia’s war in Ukraine in return for technical expertise.

Despite heavy sanctions and economic difficulties, Kim Jong Un has prioritized military expansion, pledging in 2021 to develop nuclear submarines alongside hypersonic missiles, spy satellites, and multi-warhead ICBMs. If operational, this submarine would significantly enhance North Korea’s ability to launch stealth missile attacks, making detection far more difficult for adversaries.

Experts estimate that North Korea could test-launch the vessel within a year or two before integrating it into active service. However, questions remain about the country's ability to sustain and maintain a nuclear-powered submarine given its economic constraints.
