At the Majestic Castle, How Islam is Penetrating the Heart of the British Kingdom?
In an unprecedented event, Windsor Castle, a symbol of British monarchy for a thousand years, recently hosted, for the first time, an open Iftar event. Over 350 people gathered on Sunday at St. George’s Hall to break their Ramadan fast. The event, organized by the London-based charity "Ramadan Tent Project," took place inside the state rooms of the castle, a location where heads of state typically visit, and special events are held.
Ramadan is the Islamic fasting month, during which believers refrain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset. The guests broke their fast with dates before sharing a meal together in St. George’s Hall. The Muslim call to prayer resonated throughout the building, signaling the time to break the fast.
Several participants expressed their excitement about the historic event. "It’s very kind of the royal family to open their home to us," said one woman. Another added, "We never thought we would be here breaking the Iftar. We've come a long way."
Simon Maples, the operations manager at Windsor Castle, noted that the King "has supported religious diversity for many years and encourages interfaith dialogue." Omar Salha, founder and CEO of the Ramadan Tent Project, said, "The King is an excellent ambassador for this cause and is committed to community cohesion." He added, "We are grateful for his support of the British Muslim community."
The event at Windsor Castle is seen by many Britons as another symbol of Islam’s penetration into Britain’s centers of power and culture, raising questions and concerns about the future of the kingdom’s religious identity.
