France gets tough
Nuclear proposal on the table: Emmanuel Macron suggests French bombers in Germany
As U.S. President Donald Trump and Macron met at the White House, the French president floated a bold idea - stationing French nuclear-capable bombers in Germany as part of a post-war peacekeeping strategy between Russia and Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron has reportedly proposed stationing French nuclear-capable bombers in Germany as part of a post-war security arrangement following a potential peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, according to a report in The Telegraph.
Macron raised the idea during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, suggesting that the deployment could serve as a deterrent and reinforce European stability. The proposal, if pursued, would mark a significant shift in European defense policy, potentially sparking debate within NATO and among European allies.
Friedrich Merz, the leader of the victorious CDU and Germany's likely next chancellor, has urged Britain and France to expand their nuclear defenses as part of his vision for a more independent Europe, free from reliance on Donald Trump's America.
A French official told The Telegraph that deploying nuclear-capable aircraft in Germany would send a clear signal to Russia, while diplomats in Berlin suggested that the proposal was also meant to pressure British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to demonstrate his commitment to European security.
French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly discussed his European defense strategy with Merz on Sunday evening before heading to the White House to present it to Trump.
Merz has also pledged to reverse Germany’s stance on supplying Ukraine with Taurus missiles once in office. While France’s nuclear deterrent remains independent of NATO, the UK’s nuclear arsenal is integrated into the Alliance’s defense strategy. Macron has been advocating for a broader European discussion on the role of France’s nuclear weapons in safeguarding the continent.
